With Vladimir Potanin built holding company Interros by winning over the corporate customers of 2 huge Soviet-era banks in 1992. The group has interests in metals, engineering, agriculture and media. Very busy in early 2007: bachelor was arrested—and quickly released—in French ski town Courchavel by police investigating an alleged prostitution ring. (He was never charged.) Soon after announced he and Potanin were dividing up their holdings in Interros. Potanin will buy out Prokhorov’s stake in Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium; Prokhorov will buy his partner’s stake in publicly traded Polyus Gold, Russia’s largest gold miner. Why? The partners say they’d been planning the split for a long time. “A difference in personality can be a reason to divide a business,” Potanin told Russian Newsweek.
