Rachael’s Corner : Home Remedies for Sick Children.
When my husband and I married he was in the medical field. He didn’t know that I preferred a more natural route for medicine. With our first pregnancy I wanted to go “natural”, with out any “modern” intervention. After 24 hours of labor and no progress I went for an emergency c-section. Our baby was not able to be born any other way. She and I would have died if it had not been for “modern” intervention. Many other smaller events in my life contrasting “natural” and “modern” medicine have lead me to a compromise. I am so thankful we live in the times we do.

I have learned to trust my practitioner. Your practitioner has seen a lot of sick kids. They know about home remedies that were used in the absence of doctors and midwives. A lot more kids died too. You may want to do your own research. I use as many and only medical interventions that I feel comfortable with:
Decongestants, Antihistamines, Pain relievers and Fever reducers. Some times antibiotics depending on the bug.
To help enhance the effectiveness of the medications these are the home remedies I use:
THE HUMIDIFIER - it puts moisture into the air thinning out the mucus in our air ways, making it easier to breath.
A WET RAG - when we have a fever our bodies are trying to make heat, if you moisten the skin the water evaporates and cools the body.
MENTHOL RUB LIKE Vicks* (a brand my family has trusted for years) - opens up the air ways.
WATER - lots of water helps the body flush away the bad bugs and toxins.
Unexplainable but proven:
LOVE AND TOUCH - when we feel loved our immune systems work better.
REST - when we are able to sleep this allows our immune systems to be more efficient.
LAUGHTER AND SUNSHINE - when our spirits are happy our immune systems work better.
The Bible was right when is says: “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22
When my kids are sick the last place I want to be dragging them is the doctor’s office. I think of all the germs that are there with other sick kids. I do however MAKE A PHONE CALL. The triage nurse can help determine if a visit is necessary. Also you may have something that is going around with easily recognizable symptoms. Some times a script can be called in to the pharmacy with out an office visit. This I prefer. It is so hard to see my children suffering. I often feel helpless especially when they have fevers. I have to trust in God and the common sense HE has given me.

Wow, I Love This Post! In a big family someone is always sick. Amazing how things work that way, that they get better in about the same time going to the doctor or not. I always jump the gun and take the kids and find we should have just waited a day.
Yes, Ahna, I love it too.
I used to jump the gun too, not so much now but still sometimes, sigh.
