How I incoporate my 20 year experience from the corporate world into blogging.

By Jamy

I do not know about you but I am a hand-on manager. Though I am a big picture person :a person who has clear vision and direction , but I am also a manager who knows the technical know how.

And I can relate my managing experience to my blogging experience.

These are 4 skills that I acquired in the corporate world that are relevant to blogging.

1. Set realistic goals.

Be realistic about your goals. You can have long term goals, medium term goals and short term goals. From my mental health studies, one of the big differences between mental wellness and mental illness is that the mental ill person has poor insight and judgment, and a lot of times he/she has many illusions. So, being a sound mental health person, you need to be realistic with your goals. Unrealistic goals set you up to have many uncalled for anxieties and anxieties lead to unnecessary panic attacks, and subsequently resulted in many mental health issues. You need to understand your strength and weakness.

In terms of blogging, you need to find out if you are blogging for money as in the case of Kate or you are blogging for leisure ? Once you identify your goal(s), then only you have your map to success.

2. Assess your resources.

To understand where you can acquire your resources is one of the important ingredients towards your success.

In my corporate experience, that translate to reliable employees that I can mobilize, reliable suppliers and pro-business government policies.

When I started blogging, I know this is going to be a family business in the long run. And since there is only me, my husband and my 4 years old son, by default, my husband is the only resource I can mobilize :) . So inevitably, the poor guy has to go along side with me in this adventure that I have set up for :) .

In fact, we have became closer in our relationship through blogging. We were excited when we started blogging, we knew nothing about hosting services, about file transfer, about Wordpess, about theme and many other technical stuffs. But over the few months that we have been blogging. We learned a fair bit of technical stuffs that enable us to get things done ourselves and not have to depend on others.

3. Learn some technical how of blogging.

Though I am not a look-over the shoulder kind of manager, I do like to learn some of the technical know how. One of the reasons is that you would not be taken ransom. I know it sounds bad but if you are manager of a candy store and you do not know your store’s candy inventory but your inventory clerk knows more than you, I have to tell you baby, you have a big issue on hand.

Likewise, I find this experience relevant to blogging. Your friends can only help you that much but at the end of the days, you need to learn some basic blogging softwares, some hosting issues and other technical issues related to blogging. But, remember Rome was not built in one day !

These are a few technical know how my spouse and I learned over the few months we have been blogging. We learned some basic stuffs about
FTP, plugin installation, themes installation and I think our recent achievement is learn how to use Google Webmaster Tools, and we even learn how to set up our site map :) . You do not have to be a rocket scientist to know all these know how. There are a lot of information on the web that will help you in doing just that.

4. Re-evaluate your goals.

When I was in the corporate world, I evaluateed my goals every year end and I normally have a check-list of why things did not happen as I have expected. What are the miss goals ? How could I incorporate those goals in my following year’s goals ?

Likewise , I apply that to my blogging experience.
