Another business idea : selling Israeli soil.

By Jamy

I am not sure about you, but I am a business addict. My siblings had a theory that it’s because when I was still a babe, my great grandmother who owned a opium/gambling den often put me on her lap while she was playing her Black Jake with her customers.

You see in the olden days when opium was still not an illegal item, we had opium dens in South East Asia. And men (yes only men) would come in to the opium den with their hard earn money to smoke opium. Some opium dens also provided gambling facilities for these men. Black Jacks or “Gou Ki” were two favorite games. My great grandmother was quite an unique lady in her times. While it was unheard of for any woman to step in an opium den, she owned one ! She was quite something, and I plan to write a book about this lady who had quite an interesting history. I think it will be more interesting than the any Geisha story :) .

I was so intrigued by the post tiled : “When does bargain-hunting enthusiasm become addiction?” on mightybargainhunter.com. I can relate that about my addiction on business.

Today, I want to share with you about the most bizzare business idea that I have read on Inc.com about a young Jewish man who imports dirt from the Israel and selsl it here in the US.

“I import dirt–you know, soil–from Israel,” he said. “I’ve been to Israel quite a bit, and I know how people feel about earth from the Holy Land. I figured it would be easy to import some in large lots, sell it in small lots, and make a lot of money.” He noted that, at Jewish funerals, the mourners traditionally sprinkle dirt on the coffin. He figured that a lot of people would like the idea of sprinkling Holy Land dirt, and he could sell it through funeral homes.

I think it is one of the greatest business ideas because it is recession proof. Everyone of us have to die once :) and every minute there is someone who die no matter where and how or when, you can die of cancer, you can die of old age, you can die of anything and it does not matter if you are old, young, black, white, yellow, when your time come, you are going to die. I have figured out long time ago that ‘death’ business is a recession proof business. But, my parents has strong words against me wanting to start the ‘death’ business, so I have not toy with that idea since. But, when I see this piece of article, I smile right through my cheek :) . What a brilliant young man.

  2. It is good to have you back Jamy. I know how busy you are. I continue to pray for you. Any way, I enjoy reading these business ideas you find. The trouble is being unique. I like the story of Levi Strauss. Making pants for the miners…I think he is the only one that got rich during the gold rush.

  3. Death business? Hm… it may stand against mild recession, but I can’t helped thinking really serious one, or a state of war, or a genocide, where the no. of corpses (my tribute to past, present and future genocides), people can’t afford to bury the dead in a ceremonial way. But then it’s going to be decades for USA to plunge into such a languish state, so conclusion goooood money. (sounds of the cash register).

Perhaps you should change the title of your post to Israeli Dirt. I’d think any professors of Wahhabism would wanna click that link of yours on Google.

    Daniel,
Every business take some form of risk. The insurance company would not insure disasters that are term will of God :) .
It is not only in US, even in Malaysia, ‘death business’ is a good one.
I used to tell my siblings that after the 1st and 2nd generation of the old China immigrants in Malaysia passed on, I do not think the subsequent generation would know much about the ‘death ceremony performance’, it might be a good business model if we document all the ceremonies requirement (from know how many times to bow and cry when visitors come) to how many silvers to receive when people visit. They laughed and it was only 10 years ago. And guess what, my sister booked a funeral memorial service for my dad, from cleaning/make up/dress him, transport him to/fro hospital to cemetery to providing all the Chinese ‘death ceremony’ to receptionist issues, she pay RM$50k for the service (the lady is pretty loaded). How about that for a business model and it is a K.L company which has many branches all over Malaysia :) . I am sure it beats whatever $ you will earn in the future as a lawyer :) :):) :) :).

Not, I will not change from soil to dirt. It is not dirt, it is soil :) . Does not matter if they find me or not. I blog what I love and I love to keep it that way. I don’t need fame or riches for I have all the fame and riches I have wanted :) :). In fact, I am OCD about what I do :) .
