This weekend signifies the start of my smart money shopping mindset.

I have always thought coupons are for old ladies. My old philosophy about smart shopping is that as long as I do my shoppings in Wal-Mart , Save-A-Lot or buy bulks in Sam’s Club, I am a smart shopper. I was dead wrong. If you have read my recent post about the Yin and Yan of wealth equation, you would realize I mentioned about the mind set of smart shoppers or smart money and the story of the lady named Erin who spent $800 on her annual budget for the last 4 years.

This is what smart money shoppers do :
1. Make an inventory of all the household items they need.
2. They check on stores’ sales , hot deals or even better for FREE.
3. They MATCH coupons that are related to the sales and hot deals.
4. They only shop the MATCH items that are in their inventory list .
5. They have all the goods they wanted in stock pile.

Well, this is the first time I am doing this and I am pretty please with the result and I would like to share with you.

1. 1st deal : I paid $20 for $62 worth of goods.

    6 General Mill Cheero
2 twin pack of Oral B toothbrush
7 Ajak (16 FL) dish liquid detergent
    2 Fab 2x (32loads) laundry detergent.

This is how I did it :

  • Bought 4 Oral B Tooth Brush for $14
  • Store gave $14 store credit
  • Pay $6 + $14 store credit to buy 6 pack of cereals for $20.
  • Store give back $10 store credit for the $20 cereal plus $1 off from General mill coupons
  • I used the $10 store credit to purchase 7 bottle of liquid dish detergents and 2 laundry detergents which were 50% off their normal price.

The goods prior to coupons, store credits and 50% were $62. And I only I spend $20.

Total Saving (1) = $42

2. 2nd deal : We paid $37 for $242 worth of goods.

I saw this deal which I thought was too good to be truth.

Well, Sears, Docker and Shell came out with this really great deal.

dockers_brandpage_060608_v21.jpg

This is how I did it :
Docker’s man pants were 50% off last Saturday and Sear’s gave away $75 Shell gas card to a $100 purchase and on top of that the store gave $10 credit to customer who register for a credit card with them.

I end up paying $122-$75-$10= $37

The pants prior to the 50% discount were $244

Total Saving (2) = $207

We have never bought pants from Sears. Most of the times hubby bought his work pants from Wal-Mart . Well, it is a myth that Wal-Mart is a cheap store now as far as I am concern.

So, we got 4 good quality Docker’s pant for $37, which is less than $10 per pant.

Total saving (1+2) = $249.

I have to say I am very new in this and I am very excited about the opportunity to be a smart spender. Like I say, I believe acquiring wealth is nothing more than Minimize (expense) + Maximize ( Income).

I have been doing pretty well on the Maximize ( Income ) side of the equation. Check out some of the investment posts that I have written in this blog : How I turned $4,733 into $45,700 in 5 years, a wooping 865% !, and A wooping 234.97 % increase in 1 year and 277.34% increase in 3 years !, with this new discovery of (at least for me) smart money shopping mindset, I should be able to do better on the Yin side of wealth , ie Minimize (expense).

  1. Jamy, I like your new style on this site…Great Job!

Great job saving money too. I am very inspired. I am curious if I can save as much as you did because I am not living in a large town. However, I am confident I can save more using the new pharmacy chains. There are two competing with eachother. I did run the cost of home grown milk from goats. http://www.homemakerspallete.com/2008/04/is-home-grown-milk-cheaper.html see my post. I have found T.G. Lee (no growth hormone) milk for $3.89/gal at CVS. This is better milk than the off brand local grocery for $4,15/gal. Cheeper&better brand…can’t beat that. Also, milk would have to cost over $10/gal to make milking a goat feasable. I feel a lot better about buying milk from the store.

  2. Rachael,
    Thanks.
I think you can : “I am curious if I can save as much as you did because I am not living in a large town.”
Wow, you are good to find this deal : “T.G. Lee (no growth hormone) milk for $3.89/gal at CVS.”
This week I saw, Welgreens has 1/2 gal. milk for $1.99, I thought it was cheap. Well, I have to look for CVS’s goat meal. Thanks for the head up.
    Jamy
